In the 1980s a man sued every single tabletop company because he had a patent in the 1960s for a game that “simulated aspects of society”. So all roleplaying and board games he demanded a share. I read the patent, and his game was more or less a fancier “Monopoly.”
Chaosium discussed it and decided to fight it if we needed to. A friend at TSR said that the cravens then running the company sent the scammer $20k or so. Steve Jackson and Marc Miller held tough with Chaosium.
Anyway the guy’s patent was indefensible and he went away but it was irritating.
