Ford said they wanted to stay in sync with New York for... reasons. Probably to do with car industry logistics, I'm guessing.

That was my thought too. Keep the time the same between Wall St. and Bay St.
their schedules are more different than alike. Different holidays. Different pre-market and post-market hours. Many different rules.
Some equities trade on half a dozen exchanges. Around the world.
There's no need to close markets on any particular timing now. They used to be closed on Fridays so they'd have 3 full days to do paper reconciliation. Now everything is in realtime.
