1) More than a month after the World Health Organization declared an end to the global #COVID19 crisis, it's worth surveying the aftershocks of this #pandemic — from lower life expectancy to excess deaths, from ruined health-care systems to debilitating #LongCovid.

2) A study published in Nature on June 1 concluded that "the full loss of life expectancy caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is greater than previously understood." Please review the chart below showing the dramatic drops in life expectancy in the United States and other countries.

3) Although the World Health Organization's latest tally reveals the #pandemic caused more than 6.9 million deaths, this is likely an underestimate. The Economist has estimated the #pandemic has resulted in so-called excess deaths ranging from about 17.4 million to 30.4 million.

4) Initially, nations worked to protect hospitals in the #pandemic. Three years later, however, "patients, doctors and nurses are experiencing the brutal after-effects of the pandemic," The Economist noted in an article titled, "Why health-care services are in chaos everywhere."
