5pm on November 1: let’s go for a walk, it’s still light out!
5pm on November 2: an early darkness blankets the land. Fallow fields lay bone-bleached by moonlight. The last memories of summer fade into oblivion. The last echoes of hope lapse into baleful silence.
…news media are crammed with articles full of the usual simpering: we should be on standard time all the time, because circadian rhythmic wellbeing balance natural body clock, etc, presented as "the science".
The real, hard science is there's a well-documented giant jump in the pedestrian kill rate coinciding with the change to "standard" (winter) time, and – contrary to mythunderstanding – it's not a brief spike while people get adjusted. The kill rate remains highly elevated until it drops back down immediately we return to Daylight (summer) time. Data in link.
It's certainly true that futzing with the clock makes us feel crummy; we've given ourselves a case of jetlag. And maybe some of the simpering is true as far as it goes. But it's also true that we can't ask all those extra killed pedestrians if they were feeling maybe a little less than fully chipper in their final moments, because they're dead.
