Ok #Pathfinder lore fans... buckle up... it's time to talk about Arazni.
A friend of mine asked about her and wanted to know more, so I gave her the short-short version (and there's still a lot more to tell).
Ok, lets dive in ...
Arazni was a mortal living in Arcadia. Along comes Aroden, some powerful mortal wizard, and the two hit it off.
She hangs out with Aroden for a while being the fencing frontliner to his Azlanti wizard-ness while they go on adventures.
1/
Except that Aroden has found the secret to immortality and on his way to godhood.
So Arazni dies (#1). Bummer. But...
Several hundred years later Aroden is a god now and Arazni is an astral deva. Cool. So Aroden is like "hey old friend, be my herald, yeah?" She says yes.
Later she's so beloved she becomes a full on demigod.
Not much is known about how that happened, but we do have some rumors that she "was aquainted with" Sunlord Thalachos, the herald of Sarenrae. <3?
2/
Ok, so demigoddess Arazni (aka the Red Crusader) is also Aroden's herald. They do some cool stuff together.
Tar Baphon, mortal wizard king, shows up and Aroden pops him. Dead wizard king. But wait!—almost a thousand years later and Tar Baphon is back, all powerful and lichy.
He takes over Ustalav and a bunch of other land. Mortals keep him contained for several centuries, asking for Aroden's help with him again but Aroden is like "here's some heal spells, good luck."
3/
In the time of Iomedae, she's the (mortal) general of the Knights of Ozem, who venerate Arazni. The knights are like "we need help, yo"
Iomedae is like "yeah, we do." So they ask Aroden for help: pretty pretty please.
He's like, "nah"
So what do they do? They summon and BIND Arazni. Not ask her, but like force her to the material plane and make her fight in their war.
She's like "yeah, I'd have come if you just asked but like: this was rude." Her doubt grows, but she fights on.
4/
At some point, she comes face to skull with the Tar-Baphon, aka the Whispering Tyrant, aka bad ass lich wizard extraordinaire.
He corners her and she can't get away because she's bound. Oops. He kills her... Arazni is dead (#2)
Ok, then what?
Well, the Knights of Ozem are like "oops, our bad" and get Big Mad about it. They go on the offensive and it turns the tide of the war.
Iomedae does some Heroic Acts and is the BigDamnHero.
Arazni's (demigoddess) body is interred in Vigil.
5/
Eventually, the war is won and Tar-Baphon is imprisoned in his own fortress of Gallowspire.
The Knights of Ozem feel they can do no wrong and head down to the next closest mob of undead: Geb, named after the ghost wizard badass (see a pattern?).
They lose terribly and are turned into grave knights, who are then ordered to head back to Vigil and steal Arazni's body. (weird? gross?
)
6/
Geb turns Arazni into a lich and forces her to be his queen and handle all of the boring administrative duties of running a kingdom.
(and sexual assault)
ICK!
EVENTUALLY the Whispering Tyrant frees himself.
Arazni has some psychic connection to him because of being killed by him and goes to Lastwall to where he's amok. She finds him and fights him and BAM!
Whispering Tyrant teleports away and detonates a super-magic bomb!
