TIL that Justin Alexander was shitty about respecting Jennell Jayquays’s name after she came out as trans, and is now trying to erase her by inventing a new name for the non-linear dungeon design he once praised her for. And he has the gall to try and name it after himself.

Taking his new book off my to-read list.

I was really disappointed with this, I learnt a lot from some of his old articles and I've recommended his work quite a bit in the past.

I have hardly any connection to D&D and still read this from beginning to end because it's so fucking bizarre.

I'm not familiar with Justin Alexander, but Jennell Jaquays was a hugely important presence in the hobby for me, her art and Citybook work in particular. What sad, self-aggrandising behaviour this is.

If I may ask, is it considered respectful and appropriate to refer to earlier published works by Jennell as "writing as Paul Jaquays" or something similar, effectively using a pen name? Someone encountering older works now might assume that they were by a different person entirely, or perhaps a male relative, which seems important to correct.

My preference is that, if it’s reasonable, avoid using someone’s deadname at all. “Published under her old name” or something like that I think is fine… I mean, if you’re citing the titles people will get that she wrote them.

Thank you. I appreciate the advice.
