A big part of the lines and veils ritual, or the X-card, is to try and make sure there is zero friction in bringing stuff up.
There's a lot of social pressure to push through things, to not be the one that derails a collective exercise.

Simply saying "bring it up if something bothers you" doesn't do that: it's like your boss telling you they want honest feedback. Sorry, boss, you've got to do more than that to earn my trust.

Wholly agree. My GM at one convention game decided to do exactly this, the implied, invisible X card, rather than using some scratch paper to put a couple Xs on the table. Sure enough, there was at least one moment where I wanted to use the X card and I didn’t feel like I comfortably could. For a few other reasons besides, that ended up being the worst convention game I’ve attended in the last decade.
