I am absolutely loving the fact that fedi is the kind of place where people still not only know the terms "scrip" and "company town", not only understand why these are dangerous ideas, but are also violently vocal about how bad they are as soon as something shaped like them is mentioned.

How do we radicalize the normies on the corporate controlled net?

March 12, 2026 at 11:20:25 PM

I’ve been thinking about it as a technological feudalism.

Software folks have largely been able to own all the tools they need to produce software.

I can build a house, and I might need to rent a backhoe to dig the foundation. But when the jobs done, it’s done.

But if you pay rent for AI tools to build a piece of software, you’ll need to continue to pay rent indefinitely to maintain that software.

and that’s not NEW. High-quality open-source tools for development being free / cheap isn’t where we started. We collectively worked very hard to make “your tools should be yours, especially tools that make other tools” be the norm.

This “everybody lease the tools from your overlords” bullshit is a regression to a system that was already rejected. Which is why they’re trying to force it.
